How To Get To Carthage
The ruins of ancient Carthage are located north-east of the Tunisian capital, Tunis, approximately 15 km (about 9 miles) from the city centre. Reaching them from Tunis is straightforward, but visiting can be a bit more challenging if you're staying in one of the resorts in southern Tunisia. In that case, consider hiring a car or joining one of the excursions offered by your tour operator or local travel agencies.
In this post, we’ll guide you on how to get to Carthage from Tunis.
The archaeological sites of Carthage are spread over a wide area to the north of Tunis. It’s worth setting aside a full day to explore the ruins and visit the most important landmarks of this ancient city. We’ve written about the top sites in Carthage in a separate post on our blog. Below, we outline the most convenient ways to get there.
Note: Always check the latest timetable updates, especially for the TGM train.
How to get to Carthage – from Tunis
By TGM suburban train
Most Carthage monuments are located within walking distance of the TGM suburban railway line. Board the train at Tunis Marine Station, located near the Clock Tower in the centre of Tunis.
A short section of the line is currently under renovation (2025). So, you’ll need to get off at La Goulette Casino Station. From there, walk approximately 800 metres to the next station — [GPS;36.82862767903363; 10.311293798193994;Kheireddine]. Note: Do not get off at La Goulette Station. You can see an example walking route at this link.
The key sites in Carthage are accessible from several stops on the line, though some walking will be required. Recommended stops:
- Byrsa – Punic Ports, Willow District, and Roman Theatre
- Dermech – Byrsa Hill and Dermech Basilica
- Carthage Hanibal – Byrsa Hill and Antonine Baths (not “Baths of Antonius”)
- Salammbô – Tofet and Punic Ports
By bus from Tunis
Buses are not the most popular form of transport in Tunis. Timetables are available on the official website. It is in Arabic only, which may be difficult to navigate for many visitors.
Line 20 departs from Jardin Habib Thameur and arrives in Marsa, though the stop is quite far from the Antonine Baths.
A more convenient option is to take a minibus (louage). It departs from the same terminal as the TGM train — Tunis Marine.
By taxi or Bolt
The taxi journey from Tunis to Carthage takes around 20–25 minutes. Taxis are a popular and affordable way to get around the city. Bolt also operates in Tunis. As of 2025, Uber is not available.
By car
We’ll finish this guide with the option of arriving by car. It is easy to drive to the main attractions, and parking is usually available near the sites. The only exception is the Punic Ports and Tofet, where you may need to find a spot in the surrounding streets.
- Antonine Baths – car park in front of the ruins entrance
- Byrsa Hill – parking near the entrance
- Roman District and Roman Theatre – use the large car park near the theatre
