The Valley of the Kings is the famous royal necropolis near Luxor, on the west bank of the Nile. Hidden amongst the mountains are more than 60 tombs, built mainly for the pharaohs of Egypt’s 18th, 19th and 20th Dynasties.
The most famous is the tomb of Tutankhamun, where his extraordinary burial collection was discovered. Other tombs impress with colourful wall decorations, monumental stone sarcophagi and the remarkable craftsmanship of ancient Egyptian builders.
Only some of the tombs are open to visitors at any given time, and choosing which ones to see is an important part of planning your visit.
