Carthage was a legendary ancient city whose power and wealth inspired awe and fear among its neighbours for centuries. Located near present-day Tunis, Carthage was the centre of an empire that rivaled Rome for dominance over the Mediterranean for several centuries. Eventually, it had to surrender to the growing power of the Roman Empire. The victors razed it to the ground and built a huge city in its place. For decades was one of the largest in the entire empire. Today, visitors can walk among the monumental ruins that tell the story of the Phoenicians and Carthaginians, the Romans and the famous Punic Wars.
